How to pay for parking in Ukraine as a tourist

Parking sign near a city building — how to pay for parking in Ukraine

The parking system in Ukrainian cities is different from the European one, but you'll pick it up in minutes. Large cities — Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro, Kharkiv — have paid zones regulated by the local authorities. Mid-sized cities have fewer paid lots, and some have none at all.

In this article the REIZ Car Rental team explains how to recognize parking zone types, what payment options are available, and what to do if your car gets towed.

Parking zone types

There are three main zone types in Ukraine:

Paid parking

Marked with a blue 'P' sign labeled 'paid' or an information board with the rate. In Kyiv and Lviv rates are zonal — the center costs more than the outskirts. Payment is hourly.

Free parking

Marked with a plain blue 'P' sign. Often near supermarkets, shopping centers, or on residential streets. On weekends and at night (usually 20:00–08:00) some paid zones become free.

No-parking zones

Marked with a round red sign with a crossed-out 'P' or a 'no stopping' sign. These are located near intersections, public transport stops, and bridges. Parking here will get your car towed.

Parking payment methods

Ukraine offers several ways to pay — pick whichever is easiest for you:

1. Cash to an attendant

Some lots still have human attendants you can pay in cash. Always take the receipt — it's your proof of payment if there's a dispute.

This method is gradually disappearing — most zones now have parking meters or cashless payment.

2. SMS payment

One of the easiest options: send an SMS with the zone code to a short number, and your parking is paid. The zone code is posted on the sign or the meter. The charge is deducted from your mobile account.

Example: in Kyiv, send the zone code to your mobile operator's short number. You'll receive a confirmation with the paid time.

3. Mobile apps

The most convenient option for tourists — city-specific or universal apps. Install the app, link a card, select the zone and duration — done.

  • Kyiv Digital — Kyiv's official app with parking payment
  • Lviv Parking — for parking lots in Lviv
  • EasyPay — universal platform with payment across Ukraine
  • Park UA — covers zones in many cities

4. Parking meters

Modern touch-screen parking meters are installed in the centers of large cities. They accept bank cards and cash. After paying, print the receipt and place it behind your windshield.

5. Bank card payment

Most modern parking meters and apps accept Visa and Mastercard, including foreign cards. This is handy for tourists who don't yet have a Ukrainian SIM for SMS payments.

What to do if your car gets towed

If you come back to find your car gone, first make sure it wasn't stolen: call 102 or check the city's official service. Most of the time the car ends up in an impound lot.

  • Call the city parking service — find the number on the city hall website or the official app.
  • Find out which impound lot your car was taken to.
  • Bring your passport, car documents, and driver's license.
  • Pay the towing fee and fine — then you can collect the car.

If you're driving a REIZ rental car, let your manager know right away. We'll help you deal with the impound lot and prepare the paperwork.

Useful tips for tourists

A few practical tips that will save you time and money:

  • Read signs carefully: Ukrainian parking signs can have supplementary plates with hours and exceptions.
  • In the evening and at night many paid zones become free — this is noted on the sign.
  • On weekends (Saturday and Sunday) some cities don't charge for parking at all.
  • Never leave valuables in plain sight — even in a paid zone.
  • Keep a receipt or screenshot of your payment — it's your proof if there's a dispute.
